Richmond, VA – The City of Richmond marked the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a memorial stair climb at City Hall, honoring the firefighters and other first responders who ran toward danger during the attacks.
As part of the city’s 9/11 commemorations, recruits from the Richmond Police Department and Richmond Fire Department led city leaders and staff in a symbolic climb to the observation deck at City Hall.
The climb was designed to recognize the sacrifice of firefighters and first responders who responded to the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. During the attacks, firefighters climbed more than 100 flights of stairs inside the Twin Towers as they attempted to reach people trapped in the buildings and help those trying to escape.
The Richmond ceremony provided a physical representation of the immense effort undertaken by those first responders and served as an opportunity for city officials and employees to reflect on the lives lost and the sacrifices made that day.
The city said the event also honored the broader legacy of public service carried forward by first responders in Richmond and communities across the country.
“RPD and RFD recruits led city leaders and staff on the symbolic climb,” the city said, noting that the event recognized the sacrifice of the firefighters and first responders who “ran toward danger” in an effort to save others.
The ceremony was also an opportunity for Richmond officials to express their appreciation to local first responders, whose work continues to place them in dangerous situations while protecting residents and responding to emergencies.
The city described the event as part of its ongoing effort to remember the legacy of service associated with Sept. 11 and to recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Richmond officials said the commemoration was intended not only to remember the victims of the attacks but also to recognize the first responders who demonstrated extraordinary courage as they entered the burning towers.
The memorial stair climb brought that history into a local setting, with police and fire recruits leading participants up toward the City Hall observation deck as a symbolic tribute to the firefighters who climbed the towers more than two decades ago.
The city also thanked Richmond’s first responders for their continued dedication to the community.
“We are grateful today and every day for their dedication to our communities,” the City of Richmond said.
