North Dakota National Guard announced their new Commander

Bismarck, North Dakota – Maj. Shawn A. Markovic has been appointed as the next commander of the North Dakota National Guard headquarters at Fraine Barracks in Bismarck. This appointment was made by the North Dakota National Guard.

Maj. Markovic’s experience in the state includes serving as an organizer who supervised the North Dakota National Guard’s COVID-19 response and directing 60 mobile mass testing events, supervising and executing a Mission Readiness Airlift movement for the Arctic Eagle-Patriot exercise that was conducted in Alaska in March of 2022, and assisting with a search warrant in Williston for a person who was suspected of owning bomb-making materials.

“Pat Flanagan did an outstanding job commanding this diverse and complex unit during challenging times to include the North Dakota National Guard’s longest emergency response in its history – COVID-19,” said Col. Paul Helten, commander, 68th Troop Command, “His leadership and ability to mentor young officers and Soldiers was also invaluable to his tenure as commander.”

Lt. Col. Pat R. Flanagan has been in charge of the Civil Support Team since January of 2020, but Maj. Markovic will now take over those responsibilities.
