Richmond, VA— A police pursuit on Interstate 95 caused major traffic disruptions in Richmond on Tuesday evening, leading to a full closure of all southbound lanes for nearly two hours. The incident, which was initially categorized as a “Special Activity Incident” by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), took place near the Maury Street exit at around 5:30 p.m.
According to VDOT, all southbound lanes were blocked until approximately 7 p.m. as law enforcement responded to the situation. While Virginia State Police confirmed they were assisting with traffic control, the Henrico County Police Division was involved in aiding the Richmond Police Department with the apprehension of a suspect.
Richmond Police revealed that the pursuit began earlier in the day after officers in Henrico County attempted to pull over a vehicle that had been reported stolen from the City of Richmond. The chase escalated, leading to the lane closures on I-95 South as officers worked to detain the carjacking suspect. The investigation into the stolen vehicle remains ongoing.
The incident caused significant delays for drivers traveling through the area, with many left waiting in traffic as the situation unfolded. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the carjacking and the subsequent pursuit.
