Richmond, VA – The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred early Sunday morning at a parking garage near the university’s campus.
According to authorities, the robbery took place around 2:20 a.m. on December 7, inside the parking garage at the Coliseum Lofts, located at 1359 West Broad Street. The Coliseum Lofts, a private apartment complex close to VCU’s Siegel Center, is a popular residence for many students.
Police say two male suspects approached three victims inside the parking deck, displayed firearms, and demanded their belongings. After taking the victims’ possessions, the suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle traveling east on West Broad Street.
The suspects are described as two men in their 20s, both wearing dark clothing. Police have not yet made any arrests but are actively reviewing surveillance footage from the parking garage to aid in the investigation.
“We are committed to finding those responsible for this crime,” said VCU Police spokesperson Lt. Emily Richardson. “Our officers are working hard to gather more evidence and ensure the safety of our campus community.”
This robbery follows a string of car break-ins at nearby VCU parking decks near the Monroe Park Campus in recent weeks. However, VCU Police have stated that they do not believe the armed robbery is related to the earlier incidents. In response to these recent crimes, police have increased patrols in the area.
Many students living in the Coliseum Lofts expressed concern after hearing about the robbery, with some saying they are taking extra precautions. “I saw the alert on my phone and immediately thought about my girlfriend and our cat,” said one student, who lives nearby. “It’s unsettling, especially so close to campus.”
VCU Police are asking anyone with information about the robbery or the suspects to contact the department at 804-828-1196. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the area.
