Department of Labor assists Native Americans in finding employment

North Dakota – There are more than 2.6 million Native Americans in the United States, according to the most recent census. That represents roughly 2.6% of all Americans.

The Department of Labor is experimenting with novel approaches to workplace community support in order to assist this group.

Native Americans are given special assistance with academic, occupational, and literacy skills under Section 166 of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

Additionally, it aids in the development and training of a larger workforce within the community for tribal councils and tribal company owners.

With about 8.5% of the population, North Dakota has a higher percentage of Native Americans than most other states. Thus, this plan would have a significant effect on our state.

“Supporting the work of the Tribal Employment Rights Organization or TERO is imperative to ensuring companies doing work on or near Indian reservations understand the benefits of implementing Indian preference,” said Theresa Lujan the Tribal Liaison of the Department of Labor.

In addition to complying with legal requirements, the Department of Labor claims that these programs uphold the traditional cultural values and beliefs of the tribal people they are intended to support.
