Principal at Williston leaves after being placed on leave

Williston, North Dakota – Following a leave of absence, the elementary school principal in Williston is resigning.

This week, Robert Smith voluntarily resigned from the Williston Basin School District. After an inquiry, it was determined that he had broken federal special education rules, state laws, and school standards. He was put on paid administrative leave in October.

A student’s learning disability has been questioned, a child abuse claim was not reported, an employee was fired without higher administration’s consent, and a special education student was suspended inadvertently.

On December 5th, a motion to consider his discharge was approved by the board.
