Richmond, VA – The Virginia State Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man on Interstate 95 in Richmond, which occurred on the evening of December 9. Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 8:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle crash near the Maury Street exit.
When troopers arrived, they discovered a 2021 Ford Escape, driven by Kevin James Irvin Jr., crashed into the guardrail on the southbound lanes of I-95. The vehicle was riddled with multiple bullet holes on the driver’s side door. Irvin, who had sustained several gunshot wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
According to police, the shooting incident caused a chain-reaction crash involving four additional vehicles. Drivers attempting to avoid the Ford Escape collided with each other. Fortunately, no one in the subsequent crashes sustained serious injuries, though the situation added to the chaos on the highway.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a dark-colored sedan in the area around the time of the incident, but law enforcement has not released further details regarding the vehicle or its possible connection to the shooting. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crime.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Virginia State Police are urging anyone who may have seen the incident or has additional information to contact the agency’s tip line.
