Virginia Rolls Out New Safety Inspection Stickers for 2025

Richmond, Va. – Vehicles in Virginia will sport a new safety inspection sticker starting in 2025, marking a significant change from previous versions. The new sticker, which will feature a green color for the first time, is part of an effort to improve security and reduce the potential for counterfeiting.

According to the Virginia State Police, the updated sticker includes a number of new security features, including a holographic state seal and an image of the state’s iconic dogwood flower. These additions are designed to make it more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate the sticker and to ensure that vehicles on the road have undergone a legitimate safety inspection.

In addition to these visual upgrades, the new sticker will include two QR codes. The larger of the two QR codes will direct users to the Virginia State Police Safety Division webpage, while the smaller code will be used for administrative purposes. These changes aim to enhance the convenience and transparency of the safety inspection process.

Another notable feature of the new sticker is the way the expiration date is displayed. The expiration month will appear on a white background, while the expiration year will be printed on top of the dogwood flower image.

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Hanley, Interim Superintendent of Virginia State Police, emphasized that these changes are intended to give Virginians confidence in the safety inspection system. “We want Virginians to have confidence that when they see an inspection sticker on a vehicle, that the vehicle has been truly inspected by a qualified professional, and that vehicle is, in fact, safe to be out on the road,” Hanley said.

The new inspection stickers are part of ongoing efforts by the Virginia State Police to prevent fraud and ensure that vehicles are roadworthy and safe for public use. The transition to the updated sticker design will begin with the changeover in the calendar year from 2024 to 2025.
