Richmond, Va. — The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is hosting a hiring event next week in an effort to address ongoing staffing shortages at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Beulah Recreation Center, located at 6901 Hopkins Road in North Chesterfield.
DJJ representatives will be available to provide information about available positions, answer questions, and offer assistance with completing applications. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in on-site interviews, fingerprinting, and background checks. Additionally, qualified candidates may receive job offers on the spot.
In preparation for the event, DJJ encourages potential applicants to start or complete their online applications before attending. The department hopes the event will help bolster staffing at Bon Air, Virginia’s only juvenile detention facility for young people convicted of serious crimes in the juvenile justice system.
The event comes amid growing concerns over staffing levels at Bon Air. An independent assessment conducted last year highlighted the impact of “critically low” staffing at the facility, including increased confinement of youth, limited programming, and safety concerns. These issues have contributed to rising employee fatigue and staff turnover.
In response, DJJ has made several efforts to increase staffing and improve conditions at Bon Air. Last month, DJJ Director Amy Floriano announced a series of initiatives to address the staffing crisis, including special pay incentives and a campaign to hire 100 new workers by April. In addition, the department has implemented leadership changes at the facility in an attempt to better manage operations and improve staff morale.
Bon Air serves as a rehabilitation facility for youth who have been sentenced to confinement after being convicted of serious offenses in juvenile court. The center provides education, therapy, and vocational programs aimed at helping young people reintegrate into society upon release. However, staffing shortages have hindered the facility’s ability to offer these services at full capacity, exacerbating challenges for both the youth and staff.
The upcoming hiring event is seen as a critical step in addressing these issues and ensuring the facility can continue to provide the necessary support for its residents while maintaining safety and security.
For more information on the event or to apply online, individuals are encouraged to visit the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice website ahead of the event.
