VDOT Warns of Potential Refreeze on Richmond Roads Monday Morning

Richmond, VA — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is alerting Richmond residents about the possibility of refreezing on area roadways overnight into Monday morning. In a statement released Sunday, VDOT’s Richmond District cautioned commuters that the wet conditions left behind from melting snow could quickly turn to ice as temperatures drop, creating dangerous travel conditions for early Monday travelers.

A refreeze occurs when snow and ice that melt during the day leave wet road surfaces, which then freeze again as temperatures fall overnight. This can create hazardous conditions for motorists, particularly during the morning commute.

In response to the expected refreeze, VDOT has provided several key safety tips to help drivers navigate the potentially dangerous roads:

  • Plan ahead: Allow extra time for travel and leave early if necessary to account for possible delays.
  • Drive slowly: Reduce speeds to help maintain control of your vehicle, especially on slippery surfaces.
  • Increase following distance: Maintain a larger gap between your vehicle and others to allow for safe stopping distances.
  • Check conditions: Stay informed about road conditions and monitor local weather forecasts before heading out.

VDOT urges all drivers to exercise caution, be prepared, and adjust their driving habits to ensure safety during the anticipated refreeze.
