VDOT Northern Virginia District crews are ready for snowfall, wintry precipitation, and rain that is forecast to impact the region Saturday, officials say

Richmond, VA – According to the VDOT officials, residents are asked to monitor forecasts, change travel plans if conditions worsen, and be aware of the potential for black ice and refreezing as temperatures remain low.

Northern Virginia District crews began pretreating interstates and primary roads, along with bridges, ramps, and overpasses with salt brine Friday and will be finished by afternoon rush hour.

Brine is a 77% water and 23% salt mixture. It is sprayed on the road and when it evaporates, it leaves white lines of salt residue, commonly referred to as brine lines. Brine works to prevent ice from bonding to the pavement in the first hour or so of a snowstorm.

If you must drive, ensure headlights are on, drive for the conditions, and be familiar with these winter driving tips.
