Richmond, VA — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a significant traffic shift on Interstate 64 (I-64) as part of the ongoing Gap Segment C Widening project. The shift, which is expected to begin as early as Sunday, April 6, will impact drivers traveling westbound on I-64 from just east of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit (Exit 234) to the New Kent and James City County line.
According to VDOT, the long-term traffic adjustment is expected to be in place through the summer of 2026, with the project slated for completion by late 2027. The shift will involve the installation of a temporary traffic barrier and will move traffic 5 feet to the right, creating a safer work zone for ongoing construction.
The department also announced that for the next two weeks, there will be overnight single-lane closures from Sunday through Saturday. These closures will begin at 7 p.m. each evening and end by 5 a.m. the following morning. VDOT urges motorists to plan accordingly and expect potential delays during the overnight hours.
In addition to widening the roadway and rehabilitating the pavement, the project includes several major infrastructure upgrades. VDOT plans to repair, rehabilitate, and widen two bridges on both the east and westbound sides of I-64. The project will also bring improvements in traffic management, including the installation of overhead signage and advanced traffic management systems. Additional upgrades include the construction of sound barrier walls, retaining walls, and the installation of stormwater drainage systems, including box culverts and pipes.
The I-64 Gap Segment C Widening project is part of a broader effort by VDOT to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall driving experience for those traveling along this crucial corridor. Motorists are advised to stay informed about ongoing changes and closures as the project progresses over the next several years.
