Thousands of Richmond Residents Receive Property Tax Rebates with Incorrect Names

Richmond, VA –Thousands of Richmond residents were mistakenly issued property tax rebate checks with incorrect names, the city confirmed in a press release on Tuesday. The checks, which were part of a four-cent tax rebate program intended to benefit property owners, were sent to several thousand individuals, creating confusion and frustration among the recipients.

City officials assured the public that no taxpayer information had been compromised and that there were no concerns regarding identity theft or the misuse of personal data. Despite the error, the city emphasized that the process of issuing the checks remained secure.

The Richmond Department of Finance is currently in the process of canceling and reissuing the incorrect checks, though no specific timeline for the correction has been provided. Residents impacted by the error have already begun receiving notifications from the city, and city officials have pledged to address the issue promptly.

“I sincerely apologize for this mistake and understand the frustration it may cause for our residents,” said Jamie Atkinson, Director of Revenue, in the release. “I’m working with my team to quickly rectify the error and will ensure that all affected checks are canceled and reissued with the correct information.”

The error has sparked concerns among residents who are eager to resolve the matter. The city encourages anyone who received an incorrect check or has questions about the situation to contact the customer service team. Residents can reach out via phone at 311 or 804-646-7000, or by visiting the RVA311 online portal for assistance.

This incident comes as the city continues to navigate efforts to support its residents through tax relief programs, though it remains unclear when all affected checks will be corrected and delivered with the proper information.
