RICHMOND, Va. — The City of Richmond’s Department of Emergency Communications announced a significant improvement in its emergency response times, with 911 call processing now reduced to just 60 seconds. This change follows a strategic update implemented in 2024 to enhance the efficiency of emergency services and improve public safety across the city.
Richmond 911 has been working towards refining its operations to provide a faster and more effective response to emergencies. The recent adjustments include eliminating the practice of transferring callers to the Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA). Now, all 911 dispatchers in the city are fully certified and trained to provide medical instructions directly to callers, streamlining the process and reducing delays that were previously caused by transfers.
Stephen Willoughby, the director of Emergency Communications, Preparedness, and Response, commented on the improvements, emphasizing the critical nature of timely responses. “Every second counts in an emergency,” Willoughby said. “This operational adjustment not only improves the efficiency of our responders, but also alleviates the frustration of those in crisis.”
According to the department, the move has already shown positive results, translating into better outcomes for residents in emergency situations. Willoughby further stated that the department remains committed to continuous improvements and collaboration with public safety partners to further enhance services for Richmond’s residents.
