RICHMOND, Va. — Central Virginia is bracing for a snowstorm set to impact the region on Wednesday, February 19. Local organizations are offering valuable advice to help residents prepare for the wintry weather.
The Richmond Ambulance Authority is emphasizing the importance of staying inside during the storm, particularly for those with medical issues. First responders anticipate a rise in emergency calls, especially for conditions like hypothermia, dehydration, and frostbite. Paramedics are urging residents to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary and to focus on staying hydrated to prevent dangerous health situations.
Lieutenant Supervisor Christy Pritt of the Richmond Ambulance Authority highlighted the importance of being cautious on the roads. For those who must travel, she recommended dressing warmly and ensuring that vehicles are ready for the snow. “Snow tires are a big one, and chains,” Pritt said. “Drive slowly, increase your stopping distances, and make sure you have lots of cushion between you and other vehicles. Pay attention to the road ahead so you can spot hazards before it’s too late.” She also stressed the importance of salting sidewalks and driveways to help first responders reach homes more easily in case of emergencies.
An emergency kit in your car can be a lifesaver during severe weather. Pritt advises drivers to pack blankets, water, food, and jumper cables, just in case they become stranded in the storm.
At home, ensuring that heating systems are functioning properly is also a critical part of winter storm preparation. Eric Walker, Operations Manager at Hungerford Heating and Cooling, explained that one of the most common issues seen during snowstorms is clogged filters in heating units. “We receive about 100 calls per week, and half of them involve heating systems that aren’t properly maintained,” Walker said. “Dirty filters can severely impact airflow, and that can cause your heat pump to lock out, leaving your home without heat.”
Walker recommended that homeowners clean their air filters at least once a month, especially before major weather events. He also emphasized the importance of both indoor and outdoor unit maintenance to ensure the system runs efficiently throughout the winter months. Filters can easily be replaced at local stores such as Home Depot or Lowe’s.
As the snowstorm approaches, Richmond residents are encouraged to take these safety precautions seriously to protect themselves, their families, and their homes from the winter elements. With proper preparation, residents can stay safe and warm during the challenging weather ahead.
