Richmond, VA – City officials recognized former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder during a recent City Council meeting, celebrating his historic legacy and decades of public service.
Mayor Danny Avula, joined by members of the City Council, honored L. Douglas Wilder, who made history as Virginia’s first Black governor. Wilder’s distinguished career has also included service as lieutenant governor, state senator, and mayor of Richmond.
The recognition came as Wilder recently marked a personal milestone. Last month, the former governor celebrated his 95th birthday, an occasion city leaders described as an opportunity to reflect on his lasting contributions to both Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
