Richmond Extends Shelter Operations Amid Cold Weather

RICHMOND, Va. — The City of Richmond has announced an extension of its shelter services to provide support for individuals experiencing homelessness as the region braces for a significant drop in temperatures this week.

The Inclement Weather Shelter, managed by the Salvation Army, will remain open continuously through Friday, Jan. 24, until 12 p.m. This extended operation comes in response to the forecasted severe cold. The shelter, located at 1900 Chamberlayne Parkway, has a capacity of 66 beds for single adult men and 40 beds for single adult women. Those seeking shelter are encouraged to call ahead for availability at 804-653-5707.

In addition to the Salvation Army shelter, the City of Richmond has partnered with Daily Planet Health Services to open a secondary Inclement Weather Overflow Shelter. The overflow shelter, located at 900 E. Marshall Street, is also available 24/7 through Friday, Jan. 24, providing 59 beds for single adults and families.

The city’s ongoing efforts to support those in need also include a range of additional resources for the homeless population. The Homeless Connection Line (804-972-0813) and the Housing Resource Line (804-422-5061) are available to connect individuals with further assistance and housing solutions.

These measures are part of the city’s response to the ongoing challenges faced by the homeless community during extreme weather events, ensuring access to shelter and critical services during dangerously cold conditions.
