Richmond, VA — In response to a forecasted winter storm, Mayor Danny Avula declared a state of emergency in the City of Richmond on Sunday, January 5. The declaration comes as the region braces for severe weather conditions expected to impact the area over the coming days.
As part of the state of emergency, all City of Richmond offices will be closed on Monday, January 6. This closure also includes the rescheduling of public meetings, such as City Council sessions. Residents are encouraged to visit the city’s official website and follow social media channels for updates on city operations and services.
City officials have also announced that the Inclement Weather Shelter, operated by the Salvation Army at 1900 Chamberlayne Avenue, has been open continuously since Friday, January 3, and will remain operational through Wednesday, January 8, at 8 a.m. The shelter is providing warmth and shelter to those in need during the severe winter conditions.
Additionally, two temporary overflow shelters have been activated to accommodate additional individuals. These shelters, which will operate from 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7, are designed to provide overflow capacity only. The city advises single adult men and women to seek shelter first at the Inclement Weather Shelter on Chamberlayne Avenue. Should that facility reach capacity, the overflow sites will open to assist more individuals. Meals will be available at all shelter locations during the storm.
Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions as the winter storm unfolds.
