PETERSBURG, Va. – A vehicle collision in Petersburg on Monday evening resulted in a power outage affecting over 300 homes and businesses, following the destruction of a power pole on South Sycamore Street.
Around 9 p.m. on May 5, the Petersburg Fire Rescue & Emergency Services reported that a driver struck a utility pole carrying three transformers. The impact caused the pole to nearly split in half, leaving it dangerously close to falling onto a nearby building. Authorities quickly closed part of South Sycamore Street due to what was described as a “utility emergency.”
The crash caused widespread disruption, with an initial 349 homes and businesses left without power. According to Dominion Energy’s outage map, the number of outages was reduced to 56 by 10:45 p.m., though the utility company did not provide a specific timeline for full restoration of service.
Dominion Energy crews were on the scene working to assess and repair the damage. The utility company has been actively involved in restoring power and ensuring the safety of the area. However, officials warned that portions of South Sycamore Street, particularly between Graham Road and D’Arcy Street, would remain closed until hazardous conditions, including downed wires, were addressed.
In a statement, fire officials urged residents and motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to allow emergency personnel and utility workers to carry out their duties safely.
“We strongly urge all residents and motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes,” the statement read. “Your cooperation is essential to ensure the safety of the public and emergency crews working on scene.”
As of the latest update, no injuries have been reported. Fire officials have indicated that further updates will be provided as progress is made in the restoration efforts.
For now, the affected area remains under watch, with authorities focused on resolving the situation as safely and quickly as possible.
