Power Outage Affects Over 3,000 Dominion Energy Customers in Chesterfield and Powhatan Counties

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Over 3,000 Dominion Energy customers were left without power for several hours Monday evening, as an equipment malfunction caused widespread outages across Chesterfield and Powhatan counties.

At the height of the outage, which occurred on March 24, 2025, approximately 3,100 homes and businesses were affected in the area surrounding the World War II Memorial Highway (VA-288) and Midlothian Turnpike. Most of the impacted customers were located north of the interchange.

Dominion Energy quickly mobilized to restore power, with crews working throughout the night. The company reported that power would be restored to the majority of customers between 11 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday, March 25. By 10:45 p.m. Monday, the number of customers still without power had decreased to around 280.

The cause of the outage was traced to an equipment issue, although Dominion Energy did not provide further details on the specific nature of the malfunction.

As of Tuesday morning, power had been restored to most customers, with crews continuing to work on final repairs. Dominion Energy encouraged residents to report any ongoing issues and thanked customers for their patience during the restoration process.

The outage highlights ongoing challenges utility companies face with equipment reliability, especially in more rural and suburban areas.

Residents affected by the outage expressed frustration, but many also noted the quick response from Dominion Energy. The company has not yet commented on whether this event could impact future reliability in the region.
