Richmond, VA – A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle at a marked crosswalk in Richmond early Tuesday morning. The incident, which occurred around 6:15 a.m., led to the closure of the southbound off-ramp from Highway 99 to Steveston Highway as investigators from the Richmond RCMP worked at the scene.
According to RCMP, the pedestrian was crossing the road when the vehicle collided with them. The victim was quickly rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. Thankfully, the driver remained at the scene and has been fully cooperative with the authorities.
The RCMP are now appealing to the public for any witnesses or dash-cam footage that could assist in their ongoing investigation. In a statement, Cpl. Kenneth Lau urged both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings. “Drivers are reminded to anticipate pedestrians crossing at crosswalks,” Lau said. “Pedestrians are encouraged to make eye contact with drivers and ensure their intent to cross is acknowledged.”
The closure of the off-ramp caused significant traffic delays during the morning rush hour, with drivers advised to seek alternate routes. As of now, the ramp remains closed as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released further details on the condition of the pedestrian.
The RCMP is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
