North Dakota state government to help keep Theodore Roosevelt National Park open during government shutdown

Bismarck, North Dakota – Governor Doug Burgum says the state government will make efforts to keep the state’s sole national park open in the event of a federal government shutdown.

In the case of a federal government shutdown, Burgum said on Friday that the North Dakota Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service had tentatively negotiated an agreement to assist in keeping Theodore Roosevelt National Park open. In the event that Congress is unable to reach a consensus to continue federal financing.

The state’s Department of Parks and Recreation would provide up to $100,000 to sustain full park operations for around three weeks, pending permission from the National Park Service.

Burgum did note that further talks would be necessary to ascertain whether the state would remain involved in the event of a protracted federal government shutdown.

As early as October 1, the federal government shutdown might start.
