Henrico County, Va. — An 18-year-old man from Henrico County is facing multiple charges after a crash on Interstate 81 North and a subsequent foot chase with law enforcement on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:57 p.m. on March 2, near the Route 256 exit in Augusta County. According to Virginia State Police, the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra was traveling in the left lane when the vehicle struck the end cap of a guardrail, causing significant damage. Police later determined that the Hyundai had been stolen earlier that day from Chesterfield County.
Following the crash, the driver fled the scene on foot, prompting a search by local authorities. With the assistance of deputies from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was eventually apprehended.
The suspect, identified as Dylan E. Peters, an 18-year-old resident of Henrico County, is now facing a slew of charges. These include two counts of credit card larceny, one misdemeanor count of hit and run, one count of possession of Schedule IV substances, one count of operating without a license, one count of driving while intoxicated by drugs, one count of grand larceny, and one count of being a pedestrian on an interstate.
Peters was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Middle River Regional Jail in Staunton, where he awaits further legal proceedings.
The crash and subsequent arrest have raised concerns over both the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and the growing issue of vehicle theft in the region.
