Henrico County Woman Found Dead in James River After Two-Month Search

RICHMOND, Va. — The body of MaReesa Jones, a 59-year-old woman from Henrico County, was recovered from the James River on March 24, more than two months after she was reported missing. Jones had been last seen on February 8, standing near the railing of the Lee Bridge in Richmond, prompting a search that spanned weeks and involved multiple law enforcement agencies.

Richmond Police first responded to the scene of the Lee Bridge at approximately 8:18 p.m. on February 8 after a caller reported seeing a Black woman near the bridge’s railing. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a vehicle parked nearby, which was registered to Jones. However, despite an immediate investigation and the search of surrounding areas, Jones was not found.

Ten days later, on February 18, a missing persons report was issued for Jones, who had not been seen since that evening. Authorities began searching the James River and its banks, though high water levels and hazardous debris from flooding in the area hampered their efforts. Crews continued to comb the river and nearby locations in the weeks that followed, but it was not until late March that the discovery of a body was made.

The Richmond Police Department confirmed that a body recovered from the river on March 24 was positively identified as Jones. While the cause of death remains under investigation, authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected.

In a statement released by the department, police reiterated that the investigation is ongoing. They have asked anyone with additional information related to the case to contact the Richmond Police Department at 804-646-6764.

While the recovery of Jones’ body offers some closure to her family and friends, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death remain unclear. Authorities continue to explore all possibilities in an effort to provide answers.
