RICHMOND, Va. — A four-vehicle crash on Interstate 195 in Richmond on the evening of January 22 has left one person dead and several others injured. The Virginia State Police have identified the victim and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
At approximately 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday, state police responded to a crash on I-195 northbound at mile marker 5.2. According to Virginia State Police (VSP), a 2010 Chevy Malibu, which had been reported stolen earlier in the day, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate when it collided head-on with a 2023 Subaru in the left lane.
The force of the collision caused the Subaru to overturn, striking a 2006 Toyota Camry. As a result, a Tesla, unable to stop in time, also collided with the Malibu.
The driver of the stolen Chevy Malibu, identified as 35-year-old Ebony Washington, succumbed to injuries at the scene. The drivers of the Subaru, Toyota, and Tesla were all treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Virginia State Police have yet to release additional details about why the Malibu was traveling in the wrong direction, and the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
The crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired or reckless driving, and VSP continues to stress the importance of caution on the roadways, particularly in high-traffic areas such as I-195.
This investigation is still active, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
