Flooding Prompts Closure of James River Park Areas in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — Several popular locations along the James River in Richmond will be temporarily closed due to anticipated flooding, according to the City of Richmond’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities department. The closures, which are set to take effect on Monday, February 17, and Tuesday, February 18, come after recent heavy rainfall, which is expected to lead to rising water levels in the river.

The affected areas include:

  • Pony Pastures Parking Area
  • Huguenot Flatwater Parking Area
  • Belle Isle Service Road (public trail) next to Hollywood Rapids

The department issued a statement on its social media page, urging residents and visitors to avoid these areas for the duration of the closure. Additionally, the department reminded outdoor enthusiasts to steer clear of hiking trails during periods of rain and for at least 24 hours afterward to ensure safety.

While the flooding is expected to subside in the coming days, the closures are in place to prevent accidents and to protect the public. The department also emphasized the importance of staying updated on conditions and following official advisories for any further changes to trail and park access.

Local residents and visitors are encouraged to take caution and plan alternate routes for outdoor recreation as Richmond’s parks and trails remain impacted by the weather.
