First fatality of West Nile virus recorded in North Dakota

Fargo, North Dakota – The West Nile virus has killed a North Dakota individual over the age of 60, according to the North Dakota Department of Health.

This is the first fatality linked to West Nile virus in 2021.

The health agency recorded 19 cases of WNV in 13 counties as of Thursday. Ten of them required hospitalization. North Dakota recorded seven cases of West Nile virus in 2020, but no fatalities as a result.

In North Dakota, West Nile virus transmission generally peaks in late summer.
