CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Firefighters with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS spent several hours Wednesday night battling a series of brush fires that broke out along railroad tracks in the southern part of the county.
Crews were dispatched to the 14500 block of Route 1 around 9 p.m. following reports of flames near the tracks. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered multiple small brush fires spread out along the railway, prompting an extended response due to the difficult terrain and limited access to the area.
According to fire officials, the remote location of the fires made it challenging for firefighting units to reach and contain the flames quickly. Despite the obstacles, crews managed to bring the fires under control after several hours on the scene.
A spokesperson for CSX confirmed that trains operating in the area were temporarily held in the Walthall area as a safety precaution. As of 9:44 p.m., train activity remained suspended due to the ongoing fire response.
Fire crews remained at the scene past 10 p.m., monitoring for any remaining hotspots to prevent potential flare-ups. No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened by the fires.
The exact cause of the fires remains under investigation, and officials have not yet released further details.
