Fargo FD promotes taking part in “Fire Prevention Week”

Fargo, North Dakota – As part of “Fire Prevention Week,” the Fargo Fire Department is warning the public about the possible risks found in the kitchen.

Cooking is a major source of home fires and fire injuries in the US, according to the National Fire Protection Association, with unsupervised cooking being the main culprit.

Setting timers as a reminder will help you remember to keep an eye on what you could be cooking, according to the Fargo Fire Department. In the event of a grease fire, which may be put out by covering the fire and shutting off the burner, they advise turning pot handles toward the back of the stove and keeping a lid close by.

Creating a “kid-and-pet-free zone” of at least three feet around the area where hot food or beverages are being prepared is another strategy to stop kitchen fires.
