Family of De’Andre Johnson Demands Justice After Deadly Shooting Outside Richmond Foot Locker

RICHMOND, Va. — Nearly two months after 20-year-old De’Andre Johnson was fatally shot outside a Foot Locker store on West Broad Street, his family is still waiting for answers and justice. Johnson was killed on March 2, just weeks shy of his 21st birthday, leaving his family devastated and desperate for closure.

Johnson’s mother, Qunanette Johnson, shared her pain and heartache, recalling the last words she heard from her son. “The last words that I had with my son were, ‘Pooh, where are you going?’ And he said, ‘Ma, I’ll be back,’” she said. “I’m still waiting on him to come back.”

According to Richmond Police, officers responded to a call at approximately 2 p.m. on March 2 and found Johnson on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The incident took place outside the Foot Locker store, located next to a tobacco shop, where Johnson’s mother said he was headed before the confrontation began. A viral video that surfaced on social media appeared to show a physical altercation between Johnson and a man believed to be a Foot Locker employee. The footage cuts off just before the fatal shot was fired.

Richmond Police have yet to confirm whether the shooter was indeed a store employee. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

In an emotional interview, Johnson’s mother expressed disbelief and anger at the lack of communication from law enforcement. “We’re still fighting, trying to get justice still to this day,” said Johnson’s cousin, who described him as more of a brother than a cousin. “And we’re never letting up—that’s one thing about us—we’re not gonna let up until justice is served. We don’t care what it’s gonna take, what we gotta go through, justice is going to be served.”

Since the shooting, Johnson’s family has received minimal updates from the Richmond Police Department. The last communication from authorities occurred roughly a month ago, leaving the family in the dark about the progress of the case.

Richmond has seen a spike in violent crime in 2025 compared to the previous year, which authorities have attributed to various factors. However, Johnson’s family is frustrated by the apparent lack of urgency surrounding his case, especially as they continue to grapple with the loss of a young man who, according to them, had no intention of causing harm.

“I know my son. He knew he wasn’t in the wrong. He just wanted to hear him out, see what he had to say,” Johnson’s mother said, referring to the altercation between her son and the man outside the store.

The shooting and the lack of progress in the investigation have sparked outrage within the community, and many are calling for more transparency from law enforcement. As of now, De’Andre Johnson’s family remains committed to seeking justice, determined to make sure their loved one’s death does not go unanswered.

Richmond Police continue to investigate the case, but with no arrests made and few details released, the family’s calls for justice grow louder each day. Johnson’s loved ones hope that, in time, the truth will come to light and that the person responsible for his death will be held accountable.
