Chesterfield County, Va. — Chesterfield Fire and EMS is issuing a reminder to drivers about the importance of the “Move Over” law after one of its ladder trucks was struck early Thursday morning while responding to an accident on Interstate 95 South.
The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. on January 16, as Truck 214 was blocking traffic at the scene of a crash between World War II Veterans Memorial Highway and Iron Bridge Road. According to Chesterfield Fire and EMS, the truck was struck by a pick-up truck towing a trailer. The impact caused damage to the rear of the fire truck, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
In a statement, Chesterfield Fire and EMS emphasized the importance of Virginia’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to change lanes and slow down when approaching emergency scenes or vehicles with flashing lights on the side of the road.
“We want to remind all drivers that when you see flashing lights, it’s not just a suggestion — it’s the law,” said a spokesperson for Chesterfield Fire and EMS. “Please help us keep our firefighters safe by following this important rule.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers first responders face while working on the side of busy highways, and the vital role that drivers play in ensuring their safety.
