Chesterfield Family Left Homeless After Minivan Crashes Into Their Home

Chesterfield, VA – A Chesterfield couple and their three pets are now without a home after a minivan crashed into their residence early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on January 12, when a 2018 Dodge van drove into a house located on the 5400 block of Iron Bridge Road.

According to the Chesterfield Police Department, the male driver was traveling south on Route 10 when he missed a right turn onto Jessup Road. In an attempt to correct his course, the driver struck a curb, drove through a yard, and collided with the side of the house. Police confirmed that speed was a factor in the crash.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The homeowners, Jennifer Prince and Russell Young, were inside at the time. Young, who had just walked the dog, initially believed the loud crash was caused by one of their cats knocking something over. However, upon discovering the damage, the couple realized the severity of the situation.

“I’ve seen at least five crashes near my home since 2018,” Young said. Prince added that the area, where the lane ends abruptly, is known for frequent accidents and fender benders.

As a result of the damage, the couple’s landlord informed them that their lease would be terminated, as repairs to the property are expected to take several months. This has left Prince and Young, along with their three pets, without a place to live.

The couple expressed frustration over the recurring problem of speed-related crashes in the area, citing that drivers often accelerate too quickly as they approach the intersection. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, more than 1,165 speed-related crashes occurred at the nearby intersection in 2024 alone.

Prince and Young are hopeful that this incident will raise awareness among drivers about the dangers of speeding. “People just try to hurry and speed down Iron Bridge because it does speed up pretty fast,” said Prince. “You need to pay attention to the other drivers.”

The driver of the minivan has been charged with reckless driving. In response to their displacement, the couple has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help them get back on their feet and recover from the financial strain caused by the accident.

As the investigation continues, the community is left to reflect on the dangers of speeding and the consequences it can have on residents in the area.
