Caroline County, VA – Two Caroline County residents are facing a total of 100 felony charges after authorities uncovered a two-year prescription fraud scheme in which they illegally obtained controlled substances. Sarah Delano, 45, and Derek Delano, 53, both from the Ruther Glen area, were arrested on December 18 in connection with the fraud, which was discovered following a tip from pharmacy staff at a CVS in the Ladysmith area.
The investigation into the fraudulent activity began after pharmacy employees alerted the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office about suspicious prescription practices. Over the course of two months, authorities discovered that Sarah Delano had been posing as a medical professional from an undisclosed local medical facility since 2022. She allegedly provided accurate business details to pharmacists, allowing her to obtain more than 50 fraudulent prescriptions for controlled substances.
Both Sarah and Derek Delano have been charged with 50 counts of felony prescription fraud and 50 counts of conspiracy to commit prescription fraud. Sarah Delano is currently being held without bond, while Derek Delano was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
The investigation was a joint effort involving the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, and the Virginia Department of Health Professions. Authorities say the case highlights the ongoing issue of prescription drug fraud and the importance of vigilance by healthcare professionals and pharmacies in preventing such crimes.
The Delanos’ arrest marks the culmination of a detailed investigation aimed at cracking down on the illegal distribution of controlled substances in the area.
