Richmond Braces for Arctic Blast: AAA Offers Winter Driving Tips

Richmond, VA – As Richmond and other parts of Central Virginia prepare for an impending Arctic blast, AAA experts are urging drivers to take precautions when navigating potentially icy roads. The storm, which is expected to bring freezing rain and a chance of light snow, is likely to create dangerous driving conditions throughout the region.

Morgan Dean, a spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic, emphasized that the combination of rain turning to ice could pose significant challenges for motorists. “What drivers really need to be concerned about with this storm coming in is that it’s starting out as rain,” Dean said. “So that really is the concern that there could be some ice building up on the roadways tonight and tomorrow.”

The cold temperatures, combined with freezing conditions expected to last several days, will create hazardous travel conditions, especially on untreated roads. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has strongly advised residents to stay off the roads if possible. However, for those who must travel, AAA has provided several key tips to ensure safety.

Key Tips for Driving in Icy Conditions:

  1. Increase Following Distance: It’s crucial to give more space between vehicles to allow for longer stopping distances on icy surfaces.
  2. Slow Down: Reducing speed is essential when driving on icy or snow-covered roads. Drivers are encouraged to slow down well before approaching intersections or curves.
  3. Pack an Emergency Kit: AAA recommends keeping an emergency kit in the car, including items like jumper cables, blankets, an ice scraper, and a shovel, in case of unexpected delays or car trouble.
  4. Gentle Driving on Ice: If a driver encounters an icy patch, experts advise gentle driving. “Drivers want to sometimes slam on the brakes or try and turn the wheel to regain control, but that can actually put your car into a spin,” Dean explained. Instead, drivers should tap the brakes lightly and steer gently in the direction they wish to go.
  5. Vehicle Preparation: Before hitting the road, it’s important to check tire pressure, ensure the battery is fully charged, and top up windshield wiper fluid to avoid any complications in the cold weather.

Despite these precautions, the advice from authorities is clear: the safest option is to avoid unnecessary travel during this storm. “If you don’t have to be on the road, stay off the road,” Dean said. “It’s much better to wait out the storm in the comfort of your home rather than risk an accident in dangerous conditions.”

With the possibility of icy roads and light snow expected in the coming days, motorists are urged to take the necessary steps to stay safe and protect themselves and others on the road.
