Henrico County, VA — A 2.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Henrico County and nearby localities on Tuesday evening, January 14. The tremor, which struck just before 5:30 p.m., was felt across a wide area, from Powhatan County to the city of Richmond.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located about one mile north of Wyndham, approximately 6.3 miles north of Short Pump, and just under 10 miles from Glen Allen. While the earthquake’s intensity was considered mild, it was still enough to be noticed by residents across the region.
The USGS has invited anyone who felt the shaking to report their experience through its interactive map. Many local residents have already logged their reports, with shaking felt in various parts of the Richmond metropolitan area.
Although earthquakes of this size are generally not associated with significant damage, the USGS relies on public input to help assess the full extent of the event. No injuries or major structural damage have been reported at this time.
The region, while not known for frequent seismic activity, does experience occasional small tremors, and the recent quake serves as a reminder that earthquakes, even minor ones, can occur in unexpected places.
