The Department of Public Works has installed a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on South Belvidere at Rowe Street near the Virginia War Memorial

Richmond, VA – As part of the city’s Vision Zero Initiative, aimed at eliminating traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries, the Department of Public Works has installed a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) on South Belvidere at Rowe Street near the Virginia War Memorial. The device, designed to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety at busy or high-speed intersections, will be activated later this week.

The PHB enhances safety by providing clear signals for both pedestrians and drivers, making streets more walkable and increasing awareness at uncontrolled intersections.

**How It Works:**

– **For Pedestrians:**
Press the button to activate the beacon when ready to cross. The signal will alert drivers of your intent to cross.

– **For Drivers:**
When activated, the beacon will first display flashing yellow lights, then transition to a solid red signal, requiring drivers to stop. Once the pedestrian has safely crossed, the light will turn off, allowing drivers to proceed.

This new safety feature reflects the city’s commitment to creating safer, more accessible streets for all roadway users.
