Virginia awarded grant to expand blue catfish processing and support seafood industry

Virginia – Gov. Abigail Spanberger announced that Wanchese Fish Company will receive $248,000 through the state’s Blue Catfish Processing, Flash Freezing, and Infrastructure Grant Program to expand operations at its Suffolk facility.

Officials said the funding will support the company’s investment in advanced automation equipment, allowing for increased production of retail-packaged blue catfish products.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening Virginia’s seafood industry while addressing environmental concerns tied to invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay.

According to the state, Wanchese Fish Company purchased approximately one million pounds of blue catfish from local fishermen in 2025.

With the planned upgrades, that volume is expected to grow to around five million pounds annually over the next five years.

The increased production is projected to create between 10 and 15 new jobs across the company’s facilities.

State officials emphasized that blue catfish are considered an invasive species that threaten native ecosystems by consuming other fish and wildlife.

By increasing processing capacity and market demand, the initiative aims to reduce their population while supporting local watermen.

The company operates as part of Cooke Seafood USA, Inc., a global seafood business focused on sustainable harvesting and distribution.

Officials said the grant program provides funding for infrastructure projects that promote local food production, environmental sustainability, and economic development within Virginia communities.
