RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia State Police dedicated a new motor shed on Tuesday, May 27, at the Driver Training Complex in Nottoway County to honor Senior Trooper Mark Cosslett, who was killed in the line of duty in 2002.
Cosslett, 40, was a motor trooper at the time of his death and was the 51st member of the Virginia State Police to die in the line of duty. He was fatally shot on October 23, 2002, during the notorious Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., sniper attacks.
According to state police officials, Cosslett had just finished standing guard at his son’s preschool during his off hours when he responded to a call about shots fired on Interstate 95 near the Newton area in Nottoway County.
The newly dedicated motor shed will serve as a storage and training facility for motorcycles, aiding in the preparation of future motor troopers, according to Virginia State Police representatives.
In addition to the dedication ceremony, officials also held a memorial event on Wednesday, May 21, honoring the 67 Virginia State Police members who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The dedication of the motor shed serves as a lasting tribute to Senior Trooper Cosslett’s bravery and commitment to public safety.
